Lehi sports park in Mesa was again the hot spot for top notch rugby this weekend . In the 1st game of the day the Camelback rugby club took on the Las Vegas Woolf hounds.
After the loss to the Vegas Irish the previous week, the men of Camelback took no time off in preparing for Saturday’s game. This week coaches Mark Pekarik and Molesi Vaoga implemented a new strategy witch caused Camelback to take control of the the game in no time . At the sixteen minute mark scrum half Colter Kyllo made a short pass to Tom Howell who scored the first try of the day. Eight minutes later Petaia Matau scored the teams second try followed by a conversion kick by Richie Sefo putting the team in the lead. Vegas came back strong and scored their first try of the match and only conversion. Not willing to end the first half so close Jacobo Quintana Parra scored after picking the ball from Vegas and another conversion by Sefo.
At the start of the second half Vegas made a mad dash for the try zone and scored their
second try of the match. But that was the end of Vegas ownership of the ball as Petai Matau scored his second try of the game shortly after. After receiving a penalty kick Richi Sefo demonstrated that his skills on the field were not only for conversions as he brought the team their next three points. Two back to back trys by team captain Molesi Voaga made Camelbacks lead over Vegas all the more unstoppable. A final penalty kick by Voaga brought the match to its end with a Camelback win of 42- Vegas 12.
The two teams shook hands and held their social on the sidelines as Red Mountain Warthogs and Vegas Irish took the field for an amazing match. Then the victorious Camels joined with Vegas against Red Mountain in a quick B side match officiated by Molesi Voaga. It was truly a great day for Arizona Rugby thanks to all teams and fans that came out to support. Next week Camelback will take on Tempe at Westsides Sports Complex at 12 noon. This is the first time Camelback Rugby Club and Tempe Old Devils have seen each other since summer 7s. It will be a great game to watch!
