The fall rugby season at Grand Canyon University (GCU) has officially commenced. Under the guidance of Head Coach Sean O'Leary, the team returned to the field to shake off the off-season rust and set the tone for the months ahead.
New and Returning Faces
Sean O'Leary summarized the team's outlook saying, "We have a lot of good young talent and the players are excited for this year. This should be fun." And judging by the players on the field, he's not wrong.
Nick Bauman, a second-year player who had an outstanding last season, was on the field not to play but to offer his support to the team. Not far from him was Jackson Lachlan, the big number 8. Lachlan is entering only his second year but has already made his impact felt on the team. Luke Neely, who dominated the summer 7s season, was also eager to switch back to the 15s format.
Among the newcomers, freshman Ben Saunders made his debut at the practice, showing promise and garnering some attention.
The Practice Session
Despite the extended heat, fans showed up to watch the team's practice, and they weren't disappointed. Though the session had its share of first-game jitters, it was evident that the team is shaping up for an exciting season.
The Atmosphere
We spent most of the time talking to people and catching up with the squad rather than taking photos. Nevertheless, we managed to capture some moments from Saturday's practice. Given the excitement we saw on and off the field, this season is shaping up to be one you won't want to miss
